A Recovery Blog

This blog is about my continuing recovery from severe mental illness and addiction. I celebrate this recovery by continuing to write, by sharing my music and artwork and by exploring Buddhist and 12 Step ideas and concepts. I claim that the yin/yang symbol is representative of all of us because I have found that even in the midst of acute psychosis there is still sense, method and even a kind of balance. We are more resilient than we think. We can cross beyond the edge of the sane world and return to tell the tale. A deeper kind of balance takes hold when we get honest, when we reach out for help, when we tell our stories.

Hi hollis,

Yes, right now I have two cats. My other cat's name is Moocher. They're both around eight years old. I've always had cats around me. I love them, even the most cantankerous. I got these two early on in my illness. Later I adopted two dogs but I just couldn't take care of them properly so I had to give them away. I'm just too much of a cat person. And these were great dogs too, but they needed too much attention, just like children. Cats are more independent I think and that suits me. What's your cat's name?

I am bad at naming cats, I just can never come up with something thats suits me so I usually call them by their characteristic. Names I have had: "The Girl Cat" "The Boy Cat" (they are a pair) The Gray, The Little Calico.

Right now I have two, The Gray, and The Little Calico. Calico was a wild stray, now tamed and domestic, The Gray was a stray that came to friends, and they in turn gave him to me. I have a friend who calls him "The Rat King" cuz he looks like a big sleek rat! He has a remarkable personality, although he is such a hunter it turns my stomach!

I too love the independance of cats, and dogs slobber and jump too much for my liking.

The little calico will leap onto my lap, screw up her haunches and leap from a long distance, and when she lands, she is light as a feather.

Hi Hollis,

I'm not great at naming cats either though actually I think your names are just fine. Once when I was young I named a cat Prince Charming but wound up calling him PC because I didn't like the name. One name I did like was the first cat I considered "mine" and her name was Omnivore (Omnia for short). I named my brother's cat Squeaky but my brother privately called the cat Bunchanus Rex. But I've had my share of lame names: Blackie, Whitey, etc... I named Ozzie after the Wizard of Oz because that was part of my delusion at the time...
